Hello Biyon!

There are many good books and websites available to help you with learning SIP. A great place to start is the resource center at Tekelec:
http://www.tekelec.com/resource-center/

Be sure to check out the Webinars - there are several focusing on introducing SI
P. You'll also find the SIP Pocket Guide quite useful.

To start to answer your questions (you can get more detail at the link above):

SIP (the Session Initiation Protocol) is the signaling protocol used to establish real-time sessions on the Internet. It provides two primary services: allowing two endpoints find each other (even when their addresses frequently change), and allowing those endpoints to negotiate how they are going to communicate.

SIP runs on top of other transport protocols. Currently, there are standard defi
nitions for using SIP on UDP, TCP, and SCTP (including protecting the SIP messages on those transports with TLS).

Glad to see you joining in the SIP community. Good luck, and enjoy!

I have been studying SIP since the beginning of the year and I have been following the ongoing in the IETF of defining a P2P version of SIP. My question is what do I need to start developing SIP applications,
I'm only good at Java programming though
